Spring forward, fall back.
For months,
the sun has snuck out earlier each day.
But today we officially let him get away.
The pretty part of autumn is done,
leaving the trees’ debris on sidewalks
like yellow slush after the rain.
Soon we will be lit by the gaudy glow
of bulbs strung and hung.
For now, just fall back.
An hour gained?
I feel the loss,
as I begin the descent into
the deep dark ending of the year.
I sigh and try not to wish it away.
