“Carnival” or “Carnaval”? And when is it in 2010?

Posted on November 17, 2009

In English, it’s “Carnival,” but in Portuguese it’s spelled “Carnaval.”  But however you spell it, it’s the world’s greatest party.

2010 Carnival starts on Friday, February 12th and ends on Fat Tuesday, February 16th.

Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, São Paulo and Olinda all host major carnaval events, each with its own style of music and parading.

In the United States, the biggest Carnaval celebration is in Austin, Texas, which for 33 years has hosted “Carnaval Brasileiro” where our own “Beleza Brazil” carnaval band is the main musical attraction.  This year, even though it doesn’t exactly coincide with carnaval, it will be held on February 20 at the Palmer Events Center in Austin.

More on carnaval as it gets closer. . .
