Billy Newman

Billy Newman's musicality, virtuosity, sensitivity, and versatility on guitar are nothing short of awesome.  How often do you find a guitarist who can play a full evening solo and never run out of material or style?  Whether performing American jazz standards, or material from his vast Brazilian repertoire, or popular or classical favorites, Billy is the epitome of guitar excellence.

Billy performs solo, as well as with his Brazilian ensemble and his jazz ensemble.

More about Billy Newman:

Billy's background includes studies in classical and jazz performance, composition, theory and improvisation, as well as percussion, with some of the finest, including Dennis Koster, Vanderlei Pereira, Tiberio Nascimento, Dennis Sandole, and Hal Galper.

Today, in addition to performing, he is a teacher himself, at the American Institute of Guitar, as well as giving private lessons in Brazilian guitar, jazz and improvisation.

He has lived for several periods in Brazil and returns regularly to Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife to perform, research and study various forms of Brazilian music (from samba and choro, to northeastern rhythms like frevo and baião), with masters like Hermeto Pascoal, Roberto Sion, Rodrigo Lessa, Rogerio Souza, Carlinhos Leite, and many of Brazil's top contemporary ensembles.

In 2002 he spent several weeks researching and sitting in on choro performances in the clubs of Rio with Rogerio Souza, Celsinho and Ronaldo do Bandolim among others.
