APAP alert: Don’t miss “Tango Meets Joropo”

November 3, 2019 No Comments » News

For presenters looking for an award-winning show that meets the challenge of diversity, “Tango Meets Joropo” is a program performed by two prominent interpreters of their native music:  Latin GRAMMY winner Pedro Giraudo, and virtuoso Venezuelan flutist Marco Granados.

The program was presented for the first time in late 2019 at the renowned Moab Music Festival, where the presenters considered it one of the highlights of the entire festival.  As the producers described it: “Sensual Argentine tangos meet exuberant joropos and merengues from Venezuela in an exciting evening of Latin American musical diversity.  Fresh from a Latin GRAMMY award, Pedro Giraudo and his tango quartet join forces with Venezuelan flute virtuoso Marco Granados and his trio to create a musical journey filled with beautiful melodies and uplifting rhythms.”

Some rave reviews:

“When the sexy rigors of Argentine tango combined with the propulsive throb of Venezuelan joropo, … we could hardly breathe for the excitement. . . We’ll remember that joyous concert for a long, long time.” —Jamie Bernstein, Author, Film Director, Producer, Educator

“Tango meets Joropo” is an extraordinary musical mind-meld of musicians who meet in the space between their shared talents and the unique musical traditions of their countries. These gifted Venezuelan and Argentinian musicians go at it reveling in their rhythmic and characteristic differences that challenge them to push their own music into a new realm. It’s exciting stuff to see them interact and respond to each other whilst performing an unforgettable evening of music.” —Margaret Mercer, former Program Director WQXR

The tangos range from some classic favorites, some tango nuevo (Astor Piazzolla), and original compositions by Pedro Giraudo.  The Venezuelan music features joropos, merengues, waltzes and even a famous lullaby.

“We don’t cross-pollinate the music, but we do cross-play with different instrumentations (for example the Argentinian bandoneón and the Venezuelan cuatro) to add a new dimension,” say the two artists. For example, in some pieces, flutist Marco Granados and renowned singer Leo Granados join the Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet to play traditional and original tangos; in others bassist Pedro Giraudo joins the Venezuelan Trio playing a variety of Venezuelan music.  Alternating the two musical traditions creates a program of audience-pleasing surprises, all on the highest virtuoso level. The program ends with  a dramatic crescendo as the two ensembles join forces in a grand finale.

Pedro Giraudo wins Latin Grammy 2018!

November 28, 2018 Comments Off on Pedro Giraudo wins Latin Grammy 2018! News

The distinguished composer/bassist/leader Pedro Giraudo, originally from Córdoba, Argentina, has won the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Tango Album, “Vigor Tanguero,” with his Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet.

Pedro moved to New York City in 1996.  After performing for two decades with the most important interpreters of tango, for the last few years Pedro has been leading his own tango ensembles.

Pedro is an active and prominent cultural ambassador for this beautiful and passionate music of his native Argentina. His Latin Grammy Award winning CD is a dramatic example of how tango can be heard as a concert performance, rather than just as a backdrop for a dancers.  His performances have introduced new audiences to an incredibly rich and beautiful repertoire, especially when performed on a virtuoso level, as is the case of the musicians in the Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet, which features some of the most highly regarded tango instrumentalists.

In 2019, he will embark on a mission to reach out to audiences throughout the United States and abroad.  His management is Cantaloupe Music Productions.

We also offer top jazz ensembles, and can suggest other styles (have you ever listened to tango as just beautiful music. . . not just for dancing?  What about a vibes player—those cool sounds are wonderful on a hot summer evening?)  We have many suggestions for music that helps make beautiful, memorable parties.

We invite you to look and listen to some of the artists on our website (they are only a small sampling, but you will get a good idea of the range and the quality); check out some of our past clients and their kudos.  We’ve provided live music in the Hamptons for years.

TANGO IS NOT JUST FOR DANCING!

September 26, 2016 Comments Off on TANGO IS NOT JUST FOR DANCING! News, Uncategorized

The word “tango” conjures up images of beautiful women and handsome men, long female legs in mile-high heels kicking out in improbable patterns and curling around their partners’ legs, intense expressions on faces. To learn to dance tango is a commitment and a passion. But don’t be fooled by the dance. You needn’t take a step onto the dance floor to appreciate the beauty of tango music—this is some of the most beautiful music ever written. From the old tango masters to the innovators like Piazzolla, the melodies and instrumentation are haunting. Here in the New York area, we are fortunate to be home to some of the finest tango musicians outside of Argentina.

When Cantaloupe Music Productions was founded 15 years ago, it was to provide an incomparable depth of resources in — not tango — Brazilian music. That is still our principal priority. But about 8 years ago, we were seduced. By tango! Today we work with the best of the best of the tango musicians, and the virtuosity of their playing is astounding.

Please visit some of the tango musicians we represent. They are the best of the best to be found living anywhere outside of their native Argentina.  Then invite tango into your life or event, as we have into ours:

Pedro Giraudo tango ensembles (trio, quartet, and full tango orchestra)

Urban Tango Trio

Los Chantas

Daniel Binelli and Polly Ferman

Soloists and special formations (upon request)
