In announcing the award, Chip Boaz observes:
“The ability to turn ideas into song and then translate that sound into meaning within a listener’s ears sits at the core of a composer’s task. It’s not an easy job – it’s a process that requires a complete understanding of your core concept, a wide range of musical tools to express your idea, and then the skill to create a product that will allow musicians to adequately execute your creation. Bassist Pedro Giraudo put all these pieces together into a multi-movement piece that drew together imagery from his hometown of Córdoba, colorful jazz harmony, rhythms from Argentina and beyond, as well as his distinctive approach to texture and arrangement. “Pueblo (Village)” clocks in at over 20 minutes and elegantly brings Giraudo’s ideas to the listener in an unforgettable listening experience that overflows with a power and expression that can’t be beat.”

The Latin Jazz Corner Best Of The Year Awards is an annual event fueled by the will of our readers – the winners are selected through a voting process open to LJC readers, Latin Jazz artists, Latin Jazz fans, and the general public. The voting for our fifth annual awards ran from December 8, 2011 – December 23, 2011 and drew over 20,000 participants from around the world.

The group has been delving into the great genres of Brazilian music particularly Choro but also including Samba, Baião and Frevo. The constituents are frequent travelers to Brazil or Brazilian themselves. Our mission is to expose audiences to the rich breadth of instrumental sounds coming from this great country and seek parallels with the American jazz tradition. Recently the group did a sold out show at Cornelia Street with the great 7 string guitarist Rogerio Souza from Rio de Janeiro.

Cantaloupe Music Productions sends our musical greetings with “Jingle Samba,” by Ellen Azorin and Dionísio Santos

percussion and voice: Café • cavaquinho, violão, baixo: Dionísio • coro: Tânia, Ellen, Café

I hear the sound of the cavaquinho,
It makes me smile and move my feet
It’s Christmas time with a brand new beat
Clap your hands, move your feet. . . Jingle, jingle samba!

Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin to family and friends
Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin, our little samba sends
Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin, a song of love and peace

The tambourim and the booming tantan
Call everyone to join the fun
The world is new and life is sweet
Clap your hands, move your feet. . .Jingle, jingle samba!

Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin to family and friends
Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin, our little samba sends
Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin, a song of love and peace

So add your voice to the happy song
Forget your cares as we dance along
Together now, let’s all repeat:
Clap your hands, move your feet. . .Jingle, jingle samba!

Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin to family and friends
Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin, our little samba sends
Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin, a song of love and peace

Jinjinjin, Jinjinjin, Jingle Jingle Samba!

Sofia Tosello, whose re-imaginings of South American song has critics saying she heralds “the next wave in Latin American jazz,” will perform at the Blue Note Jazz Brunch on Sunday, November 14, 2010, together with an ensemble consisting of Octavio Brunetti on piano, Pedro Girado on bass, and Franco Pinna on percussion. Originally from Argentina, Sofa Tosello’s music is in the variety of Latin American cancion traditions, including tango, chacarera, bolero filin, son, zamba, bossa nova and Brazilian popular music. There are also shades of jazz scene and a bit of funk in her song stylings. Tosello prefers to see herself as a border-crosser, not bound by the logic of genre. Her soulful and sensitive approach combines the best of today’s global currents in jazz, Latin, and pop music while maintaining a profound respect for tradition – a feat seldom achieved by young artists.
