Laura Dreyer

Alto sax and flute player Laura Dreyer is a highly sought-after sideperson in bands like Billy Taylor, Rufus Reid, and Mel Lewis. Laura was a member of the all-female big band DIVA for six years, performing at the Blue Note, Tavern on the Green, the Kennedy Center, and jazz festivals all over the world. She has backed up such artists as Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Dave Brubeck, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, to mention just a few.

Her own group, the Laura Dreyer Quartet, has performed at many of New York’s top clubs, including Birdland, Le Bar Bat, Sete MOMA, El Taller Latino Americano, Caviarteria, and many others.

Laura's CD Mysterious Encounter has just been released on the Fahrenheit label. She is also featured on Hendrik Meurkens’ CD Poema Brasileiro, on Brazilian bassist Rogerio Botter Maio’s new release Crescendo, on both of DIVA’s big band CDs, and the newly released album from "Fiveplay" entitled On the Brink.

The National Endowment has three times awarded Laura grants in performance and jazz composition. Laura is currently a featured writer in the magazine Saxophone Journal, she teaches privately and regularly does clinics at high schools and colleges.

Laura Dreyer also performs with her all-woman
quartet, seen here at an outdoor event.

Laura's compilation CD Sax in the City, just released on Apria Records, features 11 of New York's top women instrumentalists including Laura and her ensemble, with proceeds to benefit organizations that provide support to women faced with breast cancer. Noted jazz writer Will Friedwald comments in the liner notes that the CD is "amazingly listenable and satisfying. . .The major thing all these artists have in common, even more than gender, is the excellence of their work." Laura was inspired to produce this project by her own recent breast cancer scare. Says Dreyer, "I was amazed and deeply moved by the organizations that were in place to provide emotional support, financial aid, education, medical care, and more. I was lucky that my situation did not turn out to be breast cancer, but through my experience I gained a deeper understanding of what women (and sometimes men!) who are faced with this disease must deal with. My hope is that the profits generated from this CD will help fund those charities and organizations that make such a tremendous difference in the lives of so many people. I am extremely grateful to all of the musicians who generously contributed their songs to this and hope that this music will be enjoyed my many people!" More information and secure online ordering
