plays the beautiful instrumental music of Brazil
“Choro” is a form of Brazilian instrumental music
that captivates the listener with its beautiful melodies, harmonies and
rhythms. It was popularized by the great composers Pixinguinha, Ernesto
Nazareth, and Jacob do Bandolim. Its arrangements are typically rich and
lush, moving easily from haunting melancholy to sheer joy.
How to categorize it? Is it "roots"? Pop? Jazz? Classical? It's a little
of each reaching out to many tastes in music because it is earthy
and elegant all at once, offering dazzling instrumental virtuosity.
The New York Choro Project is a unique New York-based ensemble dedicated
to this beautiful musical form. It features Dionísio Santos on cavaquinho
and guitar, Rob Curto on accordion and percussion, and Billy Newman on
guitar and percussion. They are available as an ensemble with from 3 to
6 musicians.
